Cool! It's good to find other bones players out there. We are less numerous than, say, guitar players. I've played the bones for years and always keep a set in pocket. A friend gave me my first set and I have been hooked ever since. I play when I'm driving (or whenever I'm alone with a free hand and time to kill), at the local open mike - usually from the audience (only if I know the musicians) or sometimes outside the bar (if I'm onstage I usually play the guitar, as I do in my band). I've made several sets of bones. For my first bones, I used short ribs of beef. i had a butcher who would let me see the tray and pick out the ribs with the longest, thickest, densest bones with the least marrow. I'd split the bones and scrape out the marrow, then shape the bones from the two halves. A lot of work - there must be an easier way! However, one of my favorite sets was made this way. Lately I've been making bones out of wood. I find a piece of wood from the firewood pile that has the right curve to it, cut it to the approximate length and split the bones out, then shape them from there. The split bones have matching curves and the grain is not cut. Every set of bones has a unique look, tone set and feel. Some of my loudest and most beautiful sets came from a curly oak burl, but the curly grain was difficult to split and work. I would love to watch your videos, but my connection as extremely slow. Hey Bob, I play the bones, and have for several years now. I play a range of actual bones and wooden rhythm bones. I use them at sessions as well as in the context of my band. I have found that playing the bones & spoons lets me sit in in situations where my bodhran or other drums might not be appropriate. I haven't tried making my own bones yet, but I hope to someday soon.
