    Hi Sara,

I would acutally *really* recommend ordering one from Holland! ...yes, of all places, but Brendan White's Tuneable Bodhrans are affordable, GREAT sounding, and they are *hot* in Ireland right about now. Brendan is an Irishman living in Holland, of course. Check them out at:

    www.bodhran.nl/

He will make them to your liking. Really, they are a GREAT drum and are very affordable.

I checked out the site. He has some impressive artists listed. Have you heard the difference between the double skin and the single skin bodhrans? Also, is rim size just about comfort or does it make a difference in the sound.

        Hi Sara,

I own one of his Double Skins. It takes a little time to break in, but sounds immaculate. The standard is the 16". If you call him, he's a great guy and can speak with you about it no worries.

Rim size *will* make a difference in sound; you would get a deeper tone with larger sizes. The smaller sized drums are easier to get a HIGH-to-LOW range out of, and some like it for that feature. Then there is the rim -depth-.

You can't beat the price for the sound. American Bodhran makers charge much more for drums, and his are used by some of the best....and I don't get a commission by saying so!

I took mine to Ireland and I had one Scottish Bodhran teacher closely examining it after I played (as if it were the drum and not me, just to save face *giggle*)

        Best wishes

          Oh yes.....

About the Double skin... Brendan *insists* that American Bodhran makers are mistaken for thinking that the double skins "get bubbles between the skins" automatically.

He says that this is easily remedied if you just remember to tune back up when you are finished playing.

You should look into Metloef Irish Drums. They are in Texas, but they'll ship anywhere, and they are simply awsome. I've been playing bodhran for over 20 years, performing on bodhran professionally for over 10years, and teaching (private lessons & workshops) for 4 years and I've probabyl bought and sold upwards of 20 bodhrans over the course of that time. These are my favorite bodhrans of the lot.

Great tone and pitch quality, reliable, very durable and Rob (the maker) is a joy to deal with and to know.

Tell him Vash sent ya ;-)~
  • Mandolin for sale: Scottish, handcrafted

    Sun, July 10, 2005 - 3:18 PM
I need to sell my mandolin, which I recently brought over from the UK.
It's handcrafted by Freshwater of Scotland, electro-acoustic and in very good condition. Comes with case, rainbow/leather strap, spare strings... has a sweet woody sound.
It cost $750 new, and I'm asking $400 for it.
