My love of Celtic music began in 1985 while working at a deli. The Thistle and Smrock would come on the radio and I loved that show on NPR. There was a s hop in Charlotte, NC called the Celtic Trader, thursday nights were open mic night, I would play my doumbec there and they loved it.

I live in Portland, Oregon and I am learning to play the Tin whistle. If anyone lives around there, and knows of some sessions or gatherings of traditional Irish music that I could come and learn from, I would be more than pleased

St. Patrick's Day gigs!

Just curious... What gigs are folks doing on St. Patrick's Day? If you've been wanting to do a shameless plug, but have been too full of shame to post one, now's your chance... No shame is involved because this plug was solicited...

I'm sure you're all saying to yourself, "Wow, self, a solicited plug! We've never been asked for one of those before so I don't know how we should respond... Any suggestions, Cid?"

Why, yes, and I'm glad you asked! As an example, I would offer something like this:

"Hi, I'm Cid of Jingly Bits and this St. Patrick's Day, Monday, March 17th, Jingly Bits will be giving our Farewell To California performance! Yes, at O'Flaherty's Irish Pub in downtown San Jose from 6 until at least 8 pm, we'll be giving it our all for the last time in California as we're "semi-retiring" and relocating back east. We hope to continue with our music there and maybe in a few years, you'll be able to catch us on the West Coast leg of our Unretirement Tour, but for now, this is it! We'd be delighted and honored if you could come on down, have an ale and a song or two and see us off!"

See? The plug's not that shameful when someone's asking for it... So...

What shows am I missing because of doing my own?

Cheers!
cid

St. Brides-- Army of Dalkieth Invites all those interested in the real living history of the Renaissance time period to attend the premier Northern California Event.......

Action in the Low Countries------ The School of the Renaissance Soldier. April 4-6th
At Gibson Ranch State Park in Sacramento CA

This event last year had a battle contingent of 141 persons.....

We are expecting this number to double this year.......

At What event can you experience a Renaissance style Battle with over 200 soldier wielding pike----- holding off 30 cavalry--- Black powder matchlocks blazing and Cannons booming?

This event is becoming the ultimate destination as Re-enactment Soldiers from all over the Nation are coming to attend and participate in this annual spectacular event.......

Persons who consider themselves Military oriented should heavily consider attending this Workshop in order to knock the dust off their boots and prepare for the up coming season....

With a literal City of period pavilions and tents, sutlers, cooks, vendors, musicians--- This event is quickly becoming the best opportunity for the Renaissance Faire Society (in general) to participate in a great educational and yet highly entertaining event.

Please contact me with any Questions @ Halcyoninc@aol.com for more information............. or go to you can find the website here www.renaissancesoldier.com

I'm looking for some musical entertainment for this year's festival. We were formerly the Dragon Slayers Ren Fest but had a name, location, and beneficiary change in 2008. This is a benefit event event for the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County and held at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 14th.

If you, or someone you know is interested in performing, please contact me. Obviously, the them is Scottish Renaissance. All of our music is acoustic and we have three or four "collection" areas to provide a more intimate interaction with your audience. We'll also be cycling music on the stages between other acts.

Las Vegas Irish/Celtic Musicians

Hi guys. I started a new tribe for Las Vegas Irish and Celtic musicians over at http://tribes.tribe.net/lasvegasirishmusicians. I just moved here and haven't found anyone who plays Irish/Celtic yet, so I figured I'd set this up to give people a place to meet, schedule sessions or just hang out. Stop by if you've got the time!

Hi girls and boys!

The Merry Wives of Windsor are performing at the famous Derby Club in Hollywood! It's going to be a great show and we can't wait! This historic landmark (formerly known as the Brown Derby) is opening it's doors for a night of Irish Folk music!

The show is Sept 5th (we know... a Weds but if enough people show up there is a possibility for better dates!) and starts at 8pm. The lovely and talented Christiane Cargill-Kinney is opening the Irish/folk part of the show. The Wives will be going on about 8:45pm but there will be music till very late!

You can get discount tickets through our website at www.mwow.net/tickets/ or just ask your friendly neighborhood Merry Wife! The ticket is good for a WHOLE NIGHT at the derby so come see a bunch of good bands at this historical LA landmark!
Like the ancient, three-branched symbol the group is named after (the triskele), members Portia Diwa, Shawna Spiteri and Diana Stork find inspiration in performing together and presenting their unique arrangements of traditional and contemporary music to audiences at such venues as Grace Cathedral and Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco, and the Festival of Harps in Rohnert Park.

Greetings to the Tribe...just found it and signed on this morning. :)

I'm primarily a singer, with a taste for sean-nós and multi-part a capella vocals...took up harping in 1990, now play 24-string Celtic (occassionaly 30-string Gothic.) Also the usual smattering of woodwinds, guitar and bodhrán.

Anyway, cheers!

Hi, I'm trying to get into learning how to play an instrument and my understanding is the ocarina is a good one to start with.

Does anyone here know if the ocarina has been used in the music of the differant Celtic countries?

I'm interested in creating a character from one of these regions for an SCA persona, learn some more about my ancestors and to play music as well. The little I am able to play I find very relaxing.

Thanks for your time,
Free Harp concert & lecture -- SF Main Library 11/14/06

November, 14 2006 at Festival of Harps Day at Koret Auditorium
San Francisco Main Library; 100 Larkin Street
Cost: FREE

Dram, Swedish Harp & woodwind duo: 6-7pm
Triskela Celtic Harp Trio: 7-7:30

Since the beginning, Dram has gained international reputation as guardians and renewers of the rich treasure trove of Swedish traditional music. Musicians Erik Ask-Upmark and Anna Rynefors are both "riksspelmaen" ("Official Master Musicians of the Realm") and combine ancient instruments to create new sophisticated sounds centered around the traditional Celtic Harp and the unique Swedish woodwind instrument, "Nyckelharpa". Swedish and medieval bagpipes provide the endless drone -- or dram -- from which the group gets its name.

Triskela Celtic Harp Trio -- Diana Stork, Portia Diwa & Shawna Spiteri (harp & vocals) -- play stunning original compositions, fresh arrangements of traditional Irish and Scottish tunes, plus music from around the world. They have been featured at the prestigious Festival of Harp Concert Series, the Bing Music Series at Stanford, SF City Hall and Yerba Buena Gardens. Their new CD -- "Voice of Tara" -- has been heard on the nationally syndicated radio show "Echoes".

Arrive early and enjoy a light dinner at the cafe right by the auditorium.

Free "Wicked Tinkers" MP3

For all of you mySpacers out there, Wicked Tinkers have just posted a free mp3 of a live performance of The Toasty Set. Their myspace page is www.myspace.com/wickedtinkersmusic
To quote the band's bio:

The power and emotion of the Great Highland Bagpipe

Tribal drums, fierce and joyous

The mystical rhythms of the Australian didgeridoo and

The ancient call of the Bronze-Age Irish Horn

Wicked Tinkers are a Celtic Tribal Sound Explosion!

For those who ~quite reasonably~ do not use myspace, you can also download the tune at my own website jayatwood.com/music.html

We'd love your feedback. And if you *really* like it, and wish to support the musicians, please check out our web page www.wickedtinkers.com or download more tracks at iTunes!

Peace!

Anyone else out there play Irish flute?

What type(s) of flutes (& whistles if you play them) do you play, & if you have more than one, why do you like certain ones over others or for different styles, etc.?

I'd love to hear from more Irish flute players out there!

I'm an Irish & Boehm-system flute player (whistles too!) living in Asheville, NC. I'm in the market for a new Irish flute, & I'll soon be trying out some flutes by Terry McGee from The Irish Flute Store.

I make up little songs for my son and I *love* folk music, especially celtic folk music (yes, I sing my son 200 year old songs and then he goes to school and teaches the other kids).

For some reason, I really want to learn the banjo, but is that a "celtic" instrument? I mean, how well to celtic tunes play on it.

Also, I have no idea how to play a banjo, so any tips are helpful

Thanks!
Didn't get to do anything on the actual day itself, but on the night before - March 16th - I went and saw The Black Brothers (-Michael, Martin & Shay-) at The Freight & Salvage in Berkeley. ( http://thefreight.org/2006/0603-march/info_060316.html ) It was a terrific show (-as always-), with much sing-a-long and some Irish Dancers. (4 of the dancers are their own little girls! ) Unfortunately, I can't recall the name of the group the other Irish Dancers were from. It was a blast.

We were going to a friend's house for corned beef and cabbage tonight (3/17), but it had to be post-poned until Sunday.

So, how did you folks celebrate? I especially want to know what you did music-wise.

Cullan's Hounds at the San Francisco Accordion Festival on 6-4-2006

Culann’s Hounds gave a great performance at the San Francisco Accordion Festival on June 4th. They played a great mix of traditional Irish music, an apparently Cajun tune (?) and even some Ramones with great Poguesian flair. The musicianship of all members was exemplary but the real stand-outs were Renee de la Prade on the two-row diatonic button accordion and Steve Gardner on fiddle. Mike Kelleher (guitar, vocals, pennywhistle) and Scott Marshall (bodhran) provided a solid foundation for the band’s soloists.

Here’s my Flickr photostream of the event:

Check out the band’s site and see when they’re playing near you. While you’re there, you can get some merch or buy one of their CDs from CD Baby. Support this great band!

Hi there !

Wud u like to market / promote ur music in India ? If yes, this is for you.
We are MUSIKREED. A Music Company that's working on a plan to promote indie-artists and bands from all corners of the gloe to India.
Basically we are open to any genre - which sounds good but is not commercial and yes, eclectic - becoz Indian music lovers are opening to new sounds.
We'll test market in Clubs & then sell to a captive database of music afficianados in major Indian metros. We are looking at direct sales for CDs (min. 1000 pieces) through a growing and well-knit network of listeners and music lovers.
If ud like to promote ur music to the big Indian market, pls reply to me with details.
U can send me details, website etc on parvezagm23@yahoo.co.in or boundbysoundindia@yahoo.co.in

P.S: We also plan a series of gigs at select clubs/pubs/5 star hotels later - let me know if you wud like to participate.

Cheers

NH Renaissance Faire & Samhain Celebration '06 call for talent!

Hi everyone!

In an effort to get as many people involved and in-the-know as I can I am sending out this info. for the second annual NH Renaissance Faire before their calendars fill up. :)

This is a not-for-profit event founded/coordinated by me and filled with the talents of many wonderful volunteers. We raised $400 for the Blue Ocean Society; www.blueoceansociety.org last year and our charity that we're raising money for this year is the Baby John Fund; www.babyjohnfund.org

Sponsors and advertisers are much needed to help get the faire off to a running start again this year. Please visit the website for sponsorship and ad info.; www.nhrenfaire.com/sponsor.html If anyone is interested in being involved in the faire as a volunteer staff person, entertainer or merchant please let me know.

If you'd be so kind please spread the word about this event, since we're not-for-profit there is no budget for advertising... word of mouth really helps!

Thanks, in advance, for your time. The new website is at; www.nhrenfaire.com I look forward to hearing from you!
Browne Jenkyn performs traditional music of the British Isles, as well as more recent and original pieces written in the traditional style. Their repertoire consists of songs of adventure, love and betrayal, death and the other world; along with a vast array of instrumental numbers including jigs, reels, waltzes and marches.
Their rustic, often dark sound is evocative of the woods and fields, festivals and beliefs found among the ancient peoples of the British Isles. BROWNE JENKYN weaves a colorful tapestry of folklore and music to stir the imagination.

I am wondering if anyone can recommend a few artists. I am pretty new to Celtic music... just aware of the 60's folk-rock type stuff, and what I've heard in jam sessions. I am most interested in acoustic-type things, more authentic.
Thanks

Samhain Ceili' / Renaissance Faire in NH call for talent

{I apologize for any cross posts, time is growing near and one last wave of recruitment is going out.}

The NH Renaissance Faire & Samhain Celebration is gaining momentum but I am hoping to find a band or person to play some songs for the Samhain Ceili' slot if nothing else, (5pm-7pm on Sat. night, October 29th).

This is a not for profit event with partial proceeds going to the Blue Ocean Society of Portsmouth, NH and the rest being put toward next year's faire. The event is the 29th and 30th of October, 2005, and will be in Kingston, NH, (only about an hour from Boston, MA or Manchester, NH and even less from the Portsmouth, NH area!)

There are lots of things being lined up, from dragons and fairies and singing to unicorns, kids activities, masquerade, drumming, fire dancers/belly dancers, storytellers and lots more!

Please visit the website for details; www.gypsyroses.org/NHRF.html The event is also listed under the events category in most of the troupes I am posting this to.

*Everyone is a volunteer this year*, (including me), but you will have a link from the website with a small bio. and pic if you like as well as mention in our brochure if you give me the info. I need to post it. As for merchants the space is very reasonably priced but work should be handcrafted by you preferably.

Please drop me a line ASAP if you'd like to volunteer or merchant. Thank you for your time, in advance, we hope to see you at the faire!
It cost $750 new, and I'm asking $400 for it.

The Only Book About Loreena McKennitt

I just wrote a book called "Travels With Loreena McKennitt - My Life as a Friend”. According to one London journalist, "It's not only a must for every Loreena McKennitt fan but for anyone interested in the phenomenon of "Celebrity"”. The book is a behind-the-scenes look into the world of stardom and the consequences of fame. It is a gripping tale focusing on the relationship of two close friends and the impact on the friendship when one rockets to superstardom.

Many of you know Loreena through her music and her concert appearances. My book is about Loreena behind the footlights, about Loreena not only as a talented and famous musician but as a real human being.

For more information about me, my books and how to order signed and dedicated copies, please visit my website at http://www.niemaash.com or email me at purpleinc@fastmail.fm.

13th Annual World Rhythm Festival

In case anyone is on the area, or would like to be. I
will be teaching an “Intro to Celtic Percussion”
workshop on Saturday May 21st at the 13th Annual World
Rhythm Festival (http://www.swps.org/wrf/) in Seattle
Washington.

The Annual World Rhythm Festival is the largest free
percussion festival in the world. The 12th annual
festival, held in the Spring of 2003, featured more
than 80 artists presenting more than 50 participatory
teaching workshops and 20 performances highlighting
percussive arts from around the world. Offered
completely for free to the public, the three day
festival is presented by the Seattle World Percussion
Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The
Festival offers something to all age groups, all
cultures and all rhythmic traditions. All are welcome
to come and learn, grow and play as one.

My full schedule includes a 30 minute “introduction”
performance at 12noon on Saturday, followed by a 75
minute “Intro to Celtic Percussion” worshop which will
feature info on history, regional & international
playing techniques, construction styles, and Q&A for
Bodhran, Bones & Spoons (I usually include photos and
mention of the Lambeg but I haven’t got one to play,
so….

Then on Sunday I’ll present a 75 minute “Intro to
Handheld Double Concussion Plaques & Ladels – (Bones,
Spoons & Beyond)”workshop. The workshop will feature
in depth discussion of the world history, usues, and
playing styles for bones, spoons, knives, forks,
clave, etc…

BOOMtapataCLICK!
Vash ;-)~

Wanted! St Patty's day performance artists, musicians, dancers, etc.

Howdy pilgrims,

I work for a company that is throwing a St. Patrick ’s Day party for their employees. I ’m looking for some potential entertainment that is in the theme. Since this is a typical corporate affair, it will need to be clean and tasteful. Nothing too mind shattering, of course. Irish bands, dancers, leprechauns, you know, standard stereotypical fare. Anyone have any ideas or experience doing something like this? If so, shoot me a message.

Spanks!

Band or Sessions?

Do you play in an actual band or do you just play at sessions? If you play in a band, do you have a website for your band? With tunes we can listen to?

My old pub band: http://www.breech.net/paddys_pig/ ...I moved, but they still play occassionally.

Slow Play Sessions

Anyone here in the San Jose/South Bay area interested in starting up our own slow play sessions?

For info on slow play sessions see: http://www.slowplayers.org

Basically they are sessions (that can even be held at a private residence) where the tunes are played half speed (or thereabouts) to help beginner to intermediate musicians learn to play better and also for more advanced musicians to learn more tunes in a helpful setting. All skill levels are welcome though.

I could host if need be. Anyone interested?

There used to be one in the SJ area, but I contacted the group organizer and was told they weren't really meeting anymore...

The Irish

from the isle, arrived in this country
with not very much to my name
but that name I have carried from Dublin to Derry
I'll carry it here just the same

said my father to me, "best prepare for the winter
'tis rough in the snow and the cold
every season of death and re-birth you'll be living
God willin', you'll live til' you're old

I crossed the river, I crossed the sea
I shall stand and deliver, it's the Irish in me

the footprints I follow from Lexington Hollow
lead up to North Michigan shores
there some kinfolk from Blarney, New Ross and Killarney
have all settled in by the scores

and they tell us there's plenty of work here
for hungry young lassies and lads
there is milk, there is honey and plenty of money
to send home to our mothers and dads

It's been seven long years in this country
I long for my home 'cross the sea
the government here is no better than anywhere else
least it seems so to me

be courageous and strong all ye sons and daughters
be certain no passion you lack
may the road always rise to meet you
may the wind always be at your back

Hey you all! Whats shaking?
Hey Oct. 21 at the Bitter End (1981 W. Burnside), starting 8pm, no cover charge. Their Vaudevillian humor & melodic/harmonic intensity zig-zags through time from Victornian sea chanties to P-funkish grooves with skillful, yet spacious arrangements. I'm talking about non-other than that band beyond bands, "FOLKRUM". Come see them. I'll be there.
Come join their Tribe & watch them grow. folkrum.tribe.net

If you are a beginning musician and/or new to playing Irish, Scottish and British folk music, you might want to check out a "Slow Players Session".

These sessions play all the music (jigs, reels, airs, etc.) at half speed, and gradually play tunes faster as everyone becomes familiar with the tune. A great way to practice your instrument or just learn new tunes.

To see if there's one near you, or to find out how to start your own visit:

Welcome to the Irish and Celtic Musicians Tribe!

Welcome all,

A place for musicians interested in Traditional (or "roots") Irish, Scottish and British folk music to meet, exchange ideas and tunes, talk about instruments or organize a session at a local pub. Make music!

Whether you're a beginning musician, a decent musician new to Irish/Celtic music or an experienced sessioner...you're in the right place.

Note: I know there's a similar tribe on here already. However, I didn't find it at first since I was searching for "Irish Music". No hits came up. So, I thought I make one that would come up for a variety of searches.
